Vacuum bed

The vacuum bed is a device sometimes used in BDSM play.

A person is placed in a latex envelope. These two layers of latex are stretched by a frame, and a vacuum pump or vacuum cleaner is used to remove most of the air in the envelope. This vacuum has the effect of gluing the two latex skins together and totally immobilizing the person inside. The frame can consist of a simple rectangle of perforated PVC pipes, connected by PVC joints, or three-dimensional frames of various sizes, with similar PVC construction.

The vacuum bed is a restraint accessory that enables the immobilized person to feel all the sensations associated with warmth and touch. The user is unable to move in any significant way (although slight movements are possible). Depending on the breathing system used, the patient may be unable to speak or see.

The vacuum bed must only be used with the help and constant presence of another person, as the user can neither control the vacuuming process nor leave the vacuum bed independently.

Finally, if the vacuum process can be started while the patient is in various positions, the immobilization that follows must ensure that the patient has not assumed a position that puts him or her at risk of postural asphyxia.
